It seems like everyone wants to be the overpowering pitcher and blow the ball by everyone! It makes sense really, most scouts won’t even look at you until you hit 90 right?
While throwing hard definitely has its advantage, let’s take a different look at pitching.
What do you think your number one job is on the mound?
You might think it’s striking out batters or not allowing any runs or walks in a game.
Actually, your number one job is to keep hitters off balance.
You can’t strike everyone out! It would be awesome if you could, but you won’t.
However, if you keep hitters off balance you limit their chance of hitting the ball hard.
So how do you do that?
It’s a simple formula really.
You’ve got to hit your spots, change speed and make the ball move (throwing off speed pitches)
If you upset the timing of the batter he doesn’t know what’s coming. You keep him off balance (guessing) and when he finally hits the ball he may hit a weak grounder or pop up. That’s what you want!
You really don’t want to strike everyone out.
Don’t get me wrong, getting a strike out is awesome! Nothing like it really. But if you throw 6 pitches in one inning and the result is three weak grounders for outs, you not only did your job; the likelihood of you pitching deep in the game increases.
It’s time for you to pitch smart!
So here is what we recommend you do.
