As a pitcher, you have to analyze hitters and be an avid student of the game. To make it to a higher level you must do more than rely on your fastball or pitching mechanics to get you by. Studying hitters is just one step to make it to the next level, but it’s a crucial part.

A pitcher should study scouting reports if they are available. In most High Schools they aren’t available but after you face a hitter several times you will find common traits; a hitter’s strengths and weaknesses. Not only will you have a better idea of knowing what to throw to each opposing hitter, your defense will be able to position themselves to the hitter’s strengths as well.

Here are a few helpful tips you will need as you develop a pitching strategy:

In most cases: If a hitter stands close to the plate he likes inside pitches. If the hitter stands away from the plate he likes outside pitches.

If the hitter stands straight up and down he is generally a low ball hitter and if he crouches down he most certainly likes the ball up in the zone.

There are many more advances mechanical things to look for in hitters, but we’ll save that for another email.

The point is to be an outstanding student of the game. You can’t just be a good athlete anymore to become successful at a high level.
