Some Things to Learn on Felix’s Perfect Game
August 16, 2012

A few weeks ago I was watching a Baseball documentary and the reporters were interviewing pitchers in a double A program who used to play in the Major Leagues.

They asked three of them what they have learned most from the experience and what they feel they need to do to get back to the MLB.

The answer all of them gave was get ahead of the count and stay there.

This is no new news, but here are a few pointers that will help you accomplish that.

1) Throw first pitch strikes : We talked about this about a month ago.  We also talked about mixing your first pitch pitches up every once in awhile to be unpredictable on the mound.  Make sure if you throw another first pitch, other than a fastball, its a strike.

2)  Don’t waste a pitch:  This is huge!  Once you are ahead of a batter some pitchers think they can waste a pitch.  Not true!  Don’t let the batter have the advantage.  Once you are behind in the count you can’t be as selective with your pitches as you want to be.

Last night I went to an Owlz game with a couple of great friends.  The Owlz are a local Single A team.

Our pitchers did great because they continually stayed ahead of the count.  Together, they were able to throw a shutout.  Most of the first pitches they threw were fastballs.  I saw two that were changeups and one curve.

I also noticed that all of the pitchers threw great changeups and they used them for their strikeout pitch.  They used the change more than the curve once they had two strikes.  We had around 12 strikeouts last night.  Only one batter struck out with a fastball.

What does this teach you?

If you want to stay in the game a long time you must learn strategy and stay ahead of the count.  You need three pitches that you can throw for strikes on any count.
